Renewable energy
Exploring ways to generate useful power where people work, study, and live.
We’re exploring how renewable energy and living systems can work together to make the places around us more sustainable.
Explore our ideasVirid is an early-stage company exploring renewable energy and the productive use of biomass. We bring these interests together with a simple ambition: make environmental technologies easier to integrate into everyday life.
Our starting point is the space around us, including workplaces, campuses, and urban environments, and what it could contribute to a more sustainable future.
Exploring ways to generate useful power where people work, study, and live.
Investigating how microalgae can use CO₂ and sunlight to produce new biomass.
Considering new uses for harvested algae, including feedstock for biofuels and other bioproducts.
Different technologies.
One shared space.
Our first concept brings wind power and microalgae cultivation together in a compact system. Algae absorb CO₂ as they grow and release oxygen; excess biomass can be harvested for potential use in biofuel production.
Planned size options would serve different settings, from smaller spaces to business premises and campuses. Its nature-inspired appearance is a design choice, helping it fit into its surroundings.
A vertical-axis turbine would generate electricity where wind conditions allow. Smaller configurations may operate without a turbine.
Sensors and controls are intended to manage algae growth and harvesting, while specially designed surfaces distribute sunlight within the culture. Harvested algae would be collected for further processing, rather than refined into fuel inside the unit.
REALG is a development concept, not a commercially validated product. Optical performance, net carbon benefit, energy economics, biofuel feasibility, and maintenance requirements need experimental validation.
A useful idea has to work beyond the drawing board. Our approach puts the people, places, and resources involved at the centre of development.
Understand the available space, local conditions, and the needs of the people who will use and maintain the system.
Assess energy use, environmental impact, and operating costs so that decisions can be based on evidence.
Consider upkeep, biomass collection, and what happens to materials throughout their useful life.
Virid is the company. REALG is its first project concept, focused on bringing wind energy and microalgae cultivation together. Virid’s wider focus includes renewable energy and biomass utilization.
REALG is still in development. Performance, operating requirements, and commercial feasibility need to be validated before a product offering can be defined. This website introduces the concept; it does not offer units for sale.
The primary audience is businesses seeking to integrate environmental technologies into their premises, including technology companies, office campuses, and commercial property owners. The wider concept also considers colleges, municipalities, and individuals, with configurations suited to different spaces.
The intention is to collect excess algae as biomass that could be processed into biofuel or other bioproducts. The practical processing route, collection arrangements, and economics still need to be established.
